The New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners shocked the baseball universe last night by completing a four-player trade centered around two of the most hyped young stars in baseball:
Jesus Montero – who hit over .300 and blasted four home runs for the Yankees in 18 regular season games last year – was swapped for 22-year pitching phenom Michael Pineda, who finished 2011 with a 3.74 ERA and 173 strikeouts in 171 innings.

The deal provides Seattle with an upgraded offense, and the Yankees with a solid number-two starter behind C.C. Sabathia.
Considering the premium placed on young, cheap starting pitching, most experts agree the Yankees came out on top here. Remember the Hanley Ramirez-for-Josh Beckett deal between the Red Sox and Marlins, for example? Ramirez went on to become one of the top 10 hitters in baseball… yet Boston would do that swap all over again in a heartbeat.
Who do you think got the best of the Yankees/Mariners trade?

Making his grand return to the sketch comedy show, Jimmy Fallon took over hosting duties for yesterday’s (December 17) episode of “Saturday Night Live”.
The 37-year-old kicked off the show with a monolgue song about Christmas and his joy over being back on SNL while the Cold Open featured Sully and Denise showing up at the high school dance with plenty of fake Student IDs and booze.
Other highlights included “Weekend Update: Get In The Cage” in which Nicolas Cage grilled special guest Jude Law about leaving him out of “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” along with a skit titled “Tebow” that saw yet another amazing Denver Broncos victory – after which Jesus stopped by to to ask Tim Tebow to start playing better earlier in games.
As for the musical guest, Michael Bubblé churned out performances of “Holly Jolly Christmas” and “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” while also being featured in a “Duets” segment alongside Sting, Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga and Kanye West.

The late Michael Jackson likely helped himself to extra doses of potent drugs while Dr. Conrad Murray’s back was turned and accidentally took his own life.
That’s according to the defense’s final witness, who finally came out and said, under oath, the theory that Murray’s defense has been floating for months.
Murray’s lawyers long have asserted that Jackson caused his own death, even as the likelihood of such an event has been discredited by the prosecution.

Still, White told the jury, in Jackson’s last minutes of consciousness, the insomniac took several pills of the sedative lorezepan, then injected the Propofol.
“You think it was a self-injection of propofol between 11:30 and 12?” defense attorney J. Michael Flanagan asked. “In my opinion, yes,” White responded.
White, like the prosecution’s star witness, Dr. Steven Shafer, is an anesthesiologist and Propofol expert. The prosecution will cross-examine him next week.
After that, it’s up to the jury to determine if there is reasonable doubt to acquit Murray of involuntary manslaughter, or if the prosecution made its case.
It goes without saying that Jackson’s family feels they have.
Family members have attended trial every day, wasting little time praising the D.A. – or in this case, denying Michael was responsible for his own death.
His sister La Toya Jackson Tweeted, after a particularly tense Friday in courty: “MICHAEL DID NOT KILL HIMSELF!!! HE WOULD NEVER DO THAT!!!!”
The implication isn’t that he tried to, but point taken.
There’s also the question of whether that would absolve Murray of guilt even if it did occur. The state contends it would not, and that he’s guilty anyway.
Prosecution witnesses say Murray not only gave too much Propofol, he also failed to properly monitor MJ, botched CPR and waited too long to call 911.
That, along with inconsistencies in Murray’s own timeline of events, plus startling images like the Michael Jackson autopsy photo, could be his undoing.
He faces up to four years in prison if convicted.
Dr. Conrad Murray:

Michael Jackson’s children watched him die, according to a prosecution witness in the preliminary hearing for his embattled physician, Dr. Conrad Murray.
As Murray tried in vain to revive MJ after a drug overdose, his children Paris and Prince entered his bedroom, a former employee testified on Wednesday.
“Paris screamed, ‘Daddy,’ and she started crying,” Alberto Alvarez, a logistics director for Jackson, recalled as Katherine and Janet Jackson sat in court.

Paris, Blanket and Prince have been through a lot.
Alvarez testified in the second day of a preliminary hearing in L.A. Superior Court on an involuntary manslaughter charge against Dr. Conrad Murray.
Jackson feared being murdered, we learned yesterday, but Murray is not accused of anything like that. He didn’t mean for MJ to die, but is he liable?
The judge will determine whether there’s enough evidence for a trial for the 57-year-old doctor, and it’s all but a formality that Murray will stand trial.
According to Alvarez, when MJ’s children appeared that day, Murray shouted, “Get them out! Get them out! Don’t let them see their father like this.”
At the time, Paris was 11 years old and Prince was 12.
Jackson was on his back, his eyes and mouth open, as Murray gave chest compressions and attempted mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, Alvarez says.
He was later declared dead at the hospital at age 50. It’s whether Murray was responsible for his passing away that is in question here, of course.
Murray’s conduct that day was suspicious, and his expected defense – that Michael killed himself – is thin. You won’t hear that this week, though.
At the preliminary hearing, the defense is likely to sit and watch the prosecution outline its case, rather than try to plead its own. There’s no point.
It would be a losing battle now, so they are likely to gear up for trial after seeing what the D.A. has and plans on using to convict Conrad Murray.

Michael Jackson’s posthumous new album, Michael, sold 228,000 copies in the U.S. and hundreds of thousands more abroad in its first week.
The domestic haul lagged only Taylor Swift’s Speak Now (259,000) and Susan Boyle’s The Gift (254,000). Not Invincible, but very formidable.
While perhaps a bit of a letdown by MJ standards, the “new” material was unreleased for a reason, and his sales trounced Crystal Bowersox.

Not surprisingly, the late King of Pop’s label notes that he “shipped platinum” in 14 different territories, meaning a million or more units were sent to those areas.
That’s different from his sales, which weren’t nearly that high, but it’s indicative of the interest his camp feels Michael will generate over the coming months.
MJ hit #1 Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Sweden. He was #3 and #4 in Japan and the UK, respectively, but sold more than 100,000 copies in each.
The moral of the story? While will.i.am and Ne-Yo don’t approve of the album, and the Thriller days are long gone … the man is still pretty darn legendary.
