It was titled the Rally to Restore Sanity, but it might as well have been called The Rally to Gather Together an Incredible Number of People and Bash the Heck Out of Cable News.
Indeed, in Washington D.C. on Saturday, Jon Stewart hosted an event that featured 250,000 attendees; performances by The Roots, Kid Rock and John Legend; remained entirely apolitical; and skewered the media for creating an environment of anger and intolerance.
While most of the Stewart’s roll in the rally was filled with satire and clips of how the media caters to raising the fear levels of society’s most ignorant, The Daily News host concluded the festivities with a heartfelt speech that included:
“What exactly was this? This was not a rally to ridicule people of faith. Or people of activism or to look down our noses at the heartland or passionate argument or to suggest that times are not difficult and that we have nothing to fear. They are and we do. But we live now in hard times, not end times. And we can have animus and not be enemies.
“I feel strangely, calmly good, because the image of Americans that is reflected back to us by our political and media process is false. Sanity will always be in the eye of the beholder. To see you here today and the kind of people that you are, has restored mine.”

Fitting in a weekend workout, Britney Spears was spotted leaving the gym with her boyfriend Jason Trawick and her bodyguard in Beverly Hills, CA on Saturday (October 30).
Looking in rather poor spirits, the seemingly upset “Gimme More” singer first left the gym with her bodyguard and then came back after a few minutes to pick up her ex-manager beau.
In related news, Miss Spears recently took to her Twitter account to send her love to budding superstar Willow Smith.
Commenting on Willow’s new music video for “Whip My Hair,” Brit Brit wrote, “Have you guys seen Will Smith’s daughter @OfficialWillow’s video? SOOOO CUTE!!!! (sic)”

She’s draws an audience to every movie she’s in these days, and Kristen Stewart’s “Welcome to the Riley’s” hits theaters today (October 29).
The “Twilight” superstar revealed to MTV News, “‘Rileys’ is best understood as a story of a girl trying to make it on her own — and lacking the skills to pull it off.”
“It’s about understanding who you’re playing and you have a responsibility because you feel like you can’t let them down,” she added.
Ms Stewart plays a 16-year-old (real name Allison, working-girl name Mallory) who flees to a New Orleans strip club and meets a man (James Gandolfini) who becomes her father figure and attempts to help her pick up the pieces of her broken life.

PETA has made an enticing offer to Lindsay Lohan. If the troubled actress agrees to give up meat, the animal rights group will agree to take over her rehab bill!
That’s gonna be one big ass bill too!
After hearing that Lindsay, who was ordered back to rehab instead of jail last week, has fallen on “tough economic times” as a result, PETA wrote this letter …
Should Lindsay go vegetarian? It could be worth a lot to her …
“Dear Lindsay, we understand that you’ve fallen on tough economic times, so we’re writing to you with an offer that we sincerely hope you’ll consider.”
“PETA will pay your bill for substance addiction treatment if you’ll rid yourself of one more toxic substance: meat. A crucial part of recovery is showing charity to others. One way to do this is to be kind to animals, the Earth, and your body.”
“You’ll never regret it.”
“When animals are crammed together on factory farms, disease spreads fast, so cows, chickens, and other animals are fed large amounts of antibiotics to make them grow quickly and keep them alive in filthy conditions that would otherwise kill them.”

Somehow we don’t see it happening. Though who knows, Lindsay Lohan did ditch one kind of meat in favor of a change of pace, if you know what we mean.

Continuing on her massive publicity tour, Taylor Swift performed at the JetBlue Airways terminal in JFK International Airport last night (October 27).
The “Should’ve Said No” singer was quite a draw as she played selections from her brand new album Speak Now.
Speaking of the new record, there’s widespread speculation that Taylor may sell in excess of 800,000 copies in the first week alone.
Billboard analyst Keith Caulfield told press, “Expectations are high, very high. Let’s say even though 1 million is possible, even if she doesn’t get that, it will probably sell 800,000 or more, which will give her the give biggest single sales week for an album this year … or last.”

Eric Johnson is just too good to be true.
That’s Jessica Simpson’s take on her former NFL player beau. “I’ve never really been in such a healthy relationship. I’m like, ‘Something’s going to go wrong. Is he going to trip me or something?’” the alleged singer said Tuesday.
Eric Johnson used to play for the 49ers. Now he plays with Jessica Simpson.
“I’m waiting for something bad to happen,” she said during a panel discussion at Maria Shriver’s Women’s Conference in Long Beach, Calif., on Tuesday., “but then I have realized that I actually do deserve an understanding relationship.”
Simpson, who refers to her boyfriend of six months “a hottie,” said that Eric Johnson “has been a true inspiration. He really knows himself.”
The same can be said of Jess … in a manner of speaking.
More than four years since her divorce from Nick Lachey in 2006, she’s not only found love with Eric, but also a new level of hard-fought confidence.
She can thank little sister Ashlee Simpson-Wentz for that.
“My sister and I, through my divorce, became so much closer than we’d ever been growing up,” Simpson said during yesterday’s panel discussion.
“She would always give me music to get me through.”
The sisters often cranked up the Sister Act soundtrack and Lauryn Hill’s “His Eyes on a Sparrow” as well as Patty Griffin’s “Let Him Fly”, Simpson said.
“‘Fly’ is about that moment where you learn to fly and live on your own and that’s what I was doing through my divorce, learning to live on my own.”
While Jess cherishes being an aunt to Ashlee’s son, Bronx, she said, “I always thought I would have children before her since I was married first.”
But Simpson has taken away life lessons from hard times.
“Another thing that can strip you of your self-esteem is a divorce and you have to start over and find out who you are all over again,” she said.
“I was on a little bit of a detour but I finally went back on the path that I was supposed to be on,” she said, “I grew from that experience and it made me a better lover, and hopefully a better wife one day and an incredible mother someday.”
Eric Johnson, you’re on notice man.
